On Thursday, while Caitlin was at school, Ashley and I took advantage of the First Thursday tradition of free entry to museums and went to the Seattle Art Museum with my friend Linda. We haven’t been since it reopened last year after extensive renovations. We most enjoyed the exhibit on Japanese Noh theatre, the Car exhibit in the lobby, the Some/One sculpture made of dog tags, and the African mask and costume exhibit. Ashley was both enthralled and repulse by a sculpture of a life size ceramic toilet, painted in bright colors with it’s very own ceramic poo in the toilet bowl. (Fortunately (?) I have no photo of this.)
After we soaked up the art at SAM we took a pleasant walk in the rain downtown and went to a nearby Johnny Rockets for lunch. Ashley was delighted with her hotdog lunch and accompanying strawberry milkshake as we sang along (and Ashley even danced at one point) to the classic rock n’ roll music they play. We had an opportunity to see a mounted police officer (twice!) and Ashley was wide eyed at the size of the enormous horse so close to her on the path. We ended our afternoon with Linda over hot chocolate, steamed milk and chai at Starbucks (no prizes for guessing who had the chai).

Ashey and Linda enjoying a moment of cherry tasting at Johnny Rockets. Actually, Ashley really doesn't like the candied cherries used to decorate milkshakes, yet she tries them each time. Milkshakes always look so pretty when first presented that it's hard to believe any of it won't taste good.

I had a lovely day with Susan and Ashley - and was reminded how delightful
it is to slow down and travel at the speed of a child. Life is richer at
that speed.
Wish I could have been there with you 3. What a nice outing.
Seeing the cheerful picture of Linda - did she have a look for that book
Love Among the Daughters by Elspeth Huxley?
Linda, remembering to travel at the speed of children, while sometimes a
challenge, can be very refreshing. We had a good time too.
