A Day in the Life

posted Thursday, 2 October 2008
Clock
We’ve survived September. As expected it had its emotional ups and downs as we all adjusted to knew schedules with work and school and the end of the first trimester of my pregnancy. We’re still fine tuning our weekday routine and my focus is on getting the girls where they need to be on time, and doing the tasks I need to do, without us all feeling hurried and irritable. It’s getting there.

So I thought I’d share a day in our life, and tracked my activities today. Thursday is the busiest day of the week. And though I felt tired by the end of it today, the day went smoothly and I didn’t get grumpy with the girls once.  So here it is:

7am Alarm goes off. James and I get the girls ready for school. Involves snuggles in bed with the girls, adults showering, breakfast making, lunch making and preparing nutritious and fun snacks to get us through to dinner.

8am Leave the house. James goes to work. Caitlin and I walk Ashley to school.

8:25am Drop Ashley off at choir. Walk home with Caitlin. Drive Caitlin to pre-school. I’ve been walking Caitlin to school recently, but today I need to drive downtown for Women’s Group (every other Thursday).

9am Stop at supermarket on the way downtown to pick up ingredients for Irish Tea Brack for tea I’m hosting tomorrow with other mothers from Ashley’s class.

10am Meet with my Women’s Group (we’ve been meeting for nearly 5 years).

12pm Drive back home, eat packed lunch in car en route.

12:25pm Arrive home, put girls’ clothes in laundry (socks needed for tomorrow). Empty dishwasher and clean up kitchen from morning start.

12:35pm Have a cup of tea and read some Persuasion.

12:50pm Leave to collect Caitlin from pre-school.

1:10pm Leave Caitlin’s school and drive to community center for Caitlin’s dance class. Caitlin eats packed lunch in car. (She stays for lunch at school, but is usually still hungry when I pick her up.)

1:30pm Caitlin’s dance class starts. Time to sit still for a while, catch up with my friend whose daughter is taking dance with Caitlin.  Encourage each other in various domestic projects and share tips on how to complete these projects.

2:30pm Trip to Me 'N Moms to buy rain boots for Ashley and Caitlin and an umbrella to replace Caitlin’s recently broken one.

3:10pm Collect Ashley from school and drive back to community center for Ashley’s dance class. Ashley eats her after school snack in the car on the way. Hang out together at community center before class with other families.

4:15pm Ashley’s dance class. Play with Caitlin.

5:15pm Have final small snack to get us through to dinner. Say goodbye to friends.

5:50pm Arrive home. I prepare dinner, while the girls play together. Manage to grab 10mins to keep on top of emails.

6:45pm James arrives home.

7pm Family dinner.

7:30pm James’ turn to take girls to bed (he puts their laundry into dryer…we need those socks). I clean up after dinner and make Tea Brack for tomorrow morning’s tea.

8pm James and I watch Survivor (our one TV show that we watch). I putter between ad breaks (one of the reasons I only watch Survivor on TV, I dislike ad breaks). Manage to cross off several small housekeeping tasks that I haven’t had time for lately. Small tasks but obvious visual payoff when done.

9pm James watches a movie, while I blog.

11pm Bedtime

Fortunately, this is not everyday. Thursday happens to be our busiest day. I'm thrilled to hear that you make bracks too. I'd love to swop recipes with you. My brack is closer to a dense but moist fruit cake (and for my American readers, it is nothing like the candied fruit cakes that seem to have such a bad rep here!). I'll email you my recipe if you like Rhodell. Will you send me your one??? Pretty please!!!

My curiousity is piqued, what are tea bracks? I was assuming tea balls to steep or something along those lines until your comment.

Barbara, you will learn all about the tea bracks very soon. My tea brack recipe is my favorite recipe in my repertoire. I plan on sharing it as part of the questions you sent me for when I'm the featured blogger on your site next week. Very satisfying recipe, easy, delicious and Irish!:)
