A Little Bit of Spring in Our Autumn

posted Sunday, 16 September 2007

Earlier in the year Ashley dyed an egg in her preschool class. It was a lovely marbled green and Ashley was very proud of it. Caitlin loved it too and the other day while playing with it she let it drop. Caitlin was so apologetic to Ashley who was, understandably, very upset. We decided that their was no reason not to make more even though it wasn’t Easter. So after a brief search online I found some instructions on dyeing eggs (it is not something that we did in Dublin when I was little). I found some interesting descriptions of dyeing eggs using candle wax to create polka dots. The girls loved this idea and so we set about blowing the eggs to dye them. Or should I say I set about blowing the eggs and it wasn’t until my cheeks ached that I realized that their had to be a better way than just trying to blow the yoke and albumen out of the shell. Well, duh. I should have read up on this part too because a little bit a research later I discovered that you really need to do it with a skinny straw!

Ashley, Caitlin and I loved the technique with the wax dots and enjoyed seeing how the colored dyes mixed together to come up with an interesting shade of purplish brown. The purple stood out a lot more after we painted some varnish on the dyed eggs and let them dry. Role on next Spring. Now that we are pros at this egg dyeing, and have acquired skinny straws in advance of the Spring session, I look forward to experimenting with color next time. I hope my cheeks will have recovered by then…
