My Favorite Things: Squirrels

Squirrel

One of the things I most love about living in Seattle is the enormous populations of squirrels. It seems like not a day goes by that I don’t see squirrels during the course of my day. We are even fortunate to have at least two families of squirrels living in the trees surrounding our house. We are entertained daily with their antics that we can see through our windows. Squirrels always make me smile and remind me that we are all creatures going about our daily round as best we can and that it is important to keep life simple. This little verse came to me one morning walking to work (in a time before children), with only the sound of birds chirping and squirrels moving about in the Autumn leaves.

Seattle Squirrels
Scampering softly, chasing crossly
In the early morning light.
Scurrying swiftly, climbing quickly
On my journey home at night.

I too like squirrels......but I once got a nasty bite from one of those grey furry creatures - beware, they have very sharp teeth!!!

Ouch Janet! Yes, I'm aware of their nastier side. Maylynn and I once took the children to Lincoln Park in West Seattle and while we were eating at a picnic table we were menaced by some pretty fearless squirrels trying to scavange our lunch. There were three of them and they seemed to be working as a team. It left me a bit twitchy trying to shoo them away. But I also had the pleasure of feeding a squirrel once. James and I were in New York in 1998 with my brother and during that visit we were waiting for a ferry to go over to the Statue of Liberty. An old man sitting on a bench nearby taught me how to entice one onto my lap and feed it a nut. It was such a thrill!
