Momentus Day

posted Tuesday, 11 September 2007

Today James and I saw Caitlin off at her first day of preschool. After a very busy couple of weeks since our return from France I anticipated some mixed emotions on my part with the first morning with both Ashley and Caitlin in school. To help the transition I arranged to take a walk with my friend Rosemary, who met me outside Caitlin’s school. We walked almost 4 miles around the local neighborhood making it almost to Golden Gardens. We stoically descended and ascended the many steps leading to Golden Gardens and then returned for a leisurely tea and chat at the Tully’s on Holman Road. When Rosemary left I still had about an hour before meeting James and collecting Caitlin so I just sat in the sun outside Tully’s, briefly edited my ‘To-Do’ list and read my book, The Jane Austen Book Club’. It felt wonderful…a much needed morning off after 5 years of mothering. I survived! Now it’s time to share the development of our girls and I am very relieved that the teachers who will assist with this are very warm and capable. Ashley and Caitlin love their teachers, schools and classmates. A new stage in our lives has begun.

To further celebrate this afternoon I had both time and energy to make a Dublin stew and homemade Irish Brown Soda Bread. I even rustled up some homemade chocolate chip cookies for dessert. My mind seems to be skipping over the approaching autumn in excited anticipation of winter (my favorite season). Despite the temperature being uncooperatively in the 80s today, we all managed to enjoy our dinner Smile

Oh I remember it so well! I didn't plan to have a friend to walk with so I just blurted it all out to a young guy who was stacking paper towels in the grocery store. He was quite bewildered.

Looks yummy. First sight after getting up this morning after a long sleep ex hospital!!! Must rustle up a modest breakfast....lemon and raisin pancakes (Supermarket unfortunately.) Lets hear Caitlin's first impressions of school. Have you thought that she may expect stew every day now after class?

Am surprised you hadn't read that book ages ago. I read it, thanks to Lorna, and I liked it. Looking forward to more pictures of the first days at school - and your yummy recipes.

Teri, Day 2 of Caitlin and Ashley at school and this time no friend to walk with. I thought of you as I felt tearful picking up a carton of milk at the supermarket. It made me smile (and wait until I got home to share how I was feeling with James).

Ian, I plan on posting some photos and info on Caitlin (and Ashley's) 1st day soon. As you can see from the plum crumble I followed up the stew nicely for Caitlin. She may expect a cooking/baking extravaganza every day now though....I hope you are recovering well from your surgery.

Janet, I had seen The Jane Austen Book Club around and wasn't sure whether I wanted to read it. I just love reading Austen's novels themselves. I then bought it a while back and after struggling with Lust for Life (about Van Gogh's life) I wanted something light and easy and the Austen book was just about right. Glad you liked it.

Rhodell, my fellow winter lover, so lovely to see your comment. I can't wait for that email about Tarantino...I'm not totally surprised that you would be meeting him. You, my dear, inspire me with the range of your experiences and how fully you live your life.

Love to you all, Susan
